The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral tablet containing semaglutide 25mg — the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, but in tablet form. It was developed by Novo Nordisk as an alternative for people who prefer not to use injections.
On 23 December 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Wegovy pill, making it the world's first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved specifically for weight management. It launched commercially in the United States in January 2026.
Unlike Rybelsus (oral semaglutide currently available in the UK for type 2 diabetes), the Wegovy pill uses a much higher dose — 25mg vs Rybelsus's maximum 14mg — and is specifically formulated and licensed for weight loss rather than diabetes management.
Yes — the OASIS-4 Phase 3 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2025, showed strong results. 307 adults with obesity or overweight (with at least one weight-related condition) took either oral semaglutide 25mg or a placebo daily for 64 weeks, alongside lifestyle counselling.
Results by menopause status were particularly notable: pre-menopausal women lost an average of 18.2%, peri-menopausal 15.0%, and post-menopausal 15.7%. The trial also showed improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and quality of life scores.
An indirect comparison with the STEP-1 injectable Wegovy trial showed broadly comparable outcomes — suggesting the pill delivers similar weight loss to the injection when taken consistently.

This is a common source of confusion. Both are oral semaglutide tablets, but they are fundamentally different products:
3mg, 7mg or 14mg semaglutide. Licensed for type 2 diabetes management. Off-label use for weight loss is possible but it is not its approved indication. Available from UK providers now.
25mg semaglutide. Specifically licensed for weight management in people with obesity or overweight. Nearly double the dose of Rybelsus's maximum. Not yet MHRA approved.

The Wegovy pill requires a specific routine to ensure the medication is absorbed properly — this is more demanding than the weekly injection:
The pill must be taken first thing when you wake up, before eating, drinking, or taking other medications.
Take with a small amount of plain water only — no juice, coffee, or other liquids. Other liquids reduce absorption.
After taking the pill, wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast, drinking anything other than plain water, or taking other medications.
Like the injection, doses are increased gradually over a 12-week period to reduce side effects before reaching the maintenance dose.
No UK pricing has been confirmed yet — costs will depend on MHRA approval, Novo Nordisk's UK pricing strategy, and what private providers choose to charge.
For context, in the United States the Wegovy pill launched at a self-pay price of approximately $499 per month — notably cheaper than the US injectable Wegovy (around $1,349/month). Novo Nordisk specifically positioned it as the "most affordable self-pay price to date in a GLP-1 for obesity."
UK pricing will likely be considerably lower than the US — injectable Wegovy in the UK currently costs £75–£169/month at the starter dose compared to hundreds of dollars in the US. Our best estimate for the Wegovy pill in the UK, once available, would be somewhere in the range of £80–£150/month at the starter dose — but this is speculation until Novo Nordisk confirms UK pricing.
